Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: The property is cozy and well appointed. It was very clean and the kitchen has all of the appliances, dishes, kitchen gadgets to prepare meals. There is a large balcony with a lovely view of the lake and mountains. There is a short downhill walk to the lake. We saw tons of wild horses, deer, ducks, cranes, and in San Luis we saw a bald eagle soaring. The WiFi worked great and there are quite a few books and board games available. We appreciated that there was no TV and found this home to be a great place to unplug and unwind. With a ton of natural light, it was easy to curl up and read. My older parents appreciated that there are only a couple of steps to navigate at the front door and the found that the layout of the house, walk in shower, and wide doors onto the balcony made the property very accessible. However, they did note that the toilets are low and they would have benefited from a handrail near the potty to increase accessibility. The host was incredibly responsive. We would definitely come back, especially during the late spring through early fall months. In town, we enjoyed coffee at the San Luis Coffee Co. and visited the Chapel of the Stations of the Cross.

Negative: The property is very remote and accessible by gravel roads. Many of the roads are impeccably maintained but Google Maps doesn’t differentiate. You may want to make sure that you drive in for the first time in the daylight and we would recommend starting from County Rd 21 (paved) to County Rd L.5 to County Rd 19 to County Rd 18.9… We drove in from Taos and Google had us turn off Highway 159 at mile marker 9. Zero stars, do not recommend that route… it was a pretty bumpy and precarious way to get to the location. The house is heated from a wood burning stove and space heaters. It took a bit to take off the initial chill, but was comfortable as we warmed the place up. There are three wall-mount heaters that were not in working condition that probably would have been easier and more efficient than maintaining the fireplace. You should definitely take in food and drinks, it’s quite a jaunt into town.
